Dealing with a loss counselling
Whether it is a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, a job loss or a change in our lives or lifestyles that we hadn’t expected, it is normal to feel anxious and fear the future. It can be hard to imagine a life change this big that will be positive and peaceful and allow you to start living again. Yet change and loss happens all the time.
Sometimes people don’t recognise that what they are feeling is loss. They are just aware of a sense of Emptiness, sadness, anger, feeling out of control, anxiety. This in itself can feel very alarming as people ask themselves: “What’s wrong with me?” “Am I mad?” “Why am I so miserable?” “I blame other people for everything and loose people/relationships I want/love?”
Loss manifests in lots of ways - some are not easy to see. Things like:
-
Loss of our sense of self.
-
Loss of hope
-
Loss of direction and meaning
-
Loss of life as we know it
-
Loss of the routines and relationships that are familiar to us
-
Changes in our country/world events may bring a sense of anxiety and uncertainty
Kubler Ross's grief cycle suggests that, ‘whether we recognise it or not’ we go through a number of stages:
-
Shock
-
Numbness
-
Bargaining
-
Anger
-
Acceptance
