Improving communication counselling
Whether you are talking at home 2 a family member or at work to a room full of Piers finding the right words is so important; But is not all you have to think about. Mood and attitude can change the meaning of the words whether we mean it or not! We must consider our body language! what our eyes are suggesting! Our face often has a different conversation to the one that is coming out of our mouths!!!
How to improve communication skills
After all of that we tend to manage people’s feelings with regards what you are telling them, you will start to speak about a particular thing and depending how the other person is accepting it that Will dictate how much you will say; we become hypervigilant at watching people’s reactions to what we say and as a consequence we either don’t say how we really feel or we deliver a very diluted version of what we are thinking based on what we think they can handle without getting upset.
It’s a minefield that most people learn to avoid At their peril.
Non-verbal communication
According to Ray Birdwhistell, 65% of communication happens non-verbally.
this is the languages that are not spoken like, gestures, and postures. A lot of non-verbal communication happens unintentionally and unconsciously, like fidgeting, sweating, blushing. Not even starting to look at non-verbal cues yet, things like like facial expressions and tone of voice, very discreet social cues
Perspective taking
This is putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, trying to consider someone else’s point, sing it from that perspective. When talking to someone on a business level it makes sense to deliver what they need at the level that they are at as opposed to losing them with technical detail.
this becomes rather difficult when talking to your partner, the mood is often elevated and you don’t feel your voice is being heard so for you to be intentional and try to understand your partners perspective is very difficult, it becomes more about getting them to understand what you have to say and less about listening to them.
It’s easy to hear and repeat the words, it’s another thing altogether to understand what someone means. This involves creating a space for their emotions and letting them speak through their thoughts, in an often charged environment it becomes very difficult to show empathy and authenticity for one another.
